Welcome!

Welcome to Caps 'Round the Clock, a blog covering the Washington Capitals and the NHL. In season, I update the Blog after every practice and on game day with Caps news and information, and then provide a recap and analysis after each contest. I also write a periodical Prospect Watch and weekly feature pieces on the state of the Men in Red and other things Capitals. And of course, I will post videos and tidbits from around the League and offer my two cents as the season wears on. In the offseason, I write a Report Card for each player, and will keep you updated on all the news about the Caps through the summer. I'm glad you're here, and hope you come back!

Capitals Sign Cameron Schilling

As per a team release and as first reported by TSN's Bob McKenzie, the Washington Capitals have signed college free agent Cameron Schilling to a two year, entry level deal.  As always with signings by the Capitals, the financial terms of the contract are not disclosed at this time.
Schilling, 23, played the last four seasons for the University of Miami (Ohio) Redhawks, collecting 57 points (eight goals) in 144 career games.  He had one goal and 13 assists for 14 points this season as a senior for the Redhawks, who were eliminated this past weekend by UMass-Lowell in the NCAA tournament.  In an interesting tidbit, Miami made the Frozen Four the year it was held at Verizon Center.
Schilling will report to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League this week and play the rest of the year on a tryout basis with the Bears.  His entry-level deal will not kick in until next season.
According to an NCAA scout, Schilling profiles as a physical, smart shutdown defenseman.  He is not regarded as a particularly good puck mover, but can shoot well and seems to be best suited for a more defensive role.  He doesn't have a ton of upside, but he is stable and seems like a typical McPhee signing - depth around the organization.  Perhaps the Karl Alzner to Dmirty Orlov's John Carlson down the road?
